It avoids overt hostility but maintains racial inequality by erasing lived experience and discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Neutrality is not innocence. Civility is not equity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our responsibility is to recognise when \u201cprofessionalism\u201d and \u201ckindness\u201d are used as shields against accountability and progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What is Polite Racism?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Polite racism:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Appears as <em>colour-blindness<\/em> refusing to acknowledge race<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uses the rhetoric of fairness and sameness to maintain the status quo<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Silences those who experience exclusion or bias<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Values dominant cultural norms while minimising others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is discrimination <strong>with a smile<\/strong> exclusion wrapped in courtesy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Why the Tone of Neutrality Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neutrality may appear balanced, but it can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><td><strong>Masked Harm<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Impact<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>\u201cWe don\u2019t see colour\u201d<\/td><td>Erases identity &amp; lived experience<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\u201cWe treat everyone the same\u201d<\/td><td>Protects structural privilege<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\u201cLet\u2019s not make this about race\u201d<\/td><td>Silences those harmed<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\u201cThey just weren\u2019t a good fit\u201d<\/td><td>Reinforces cultural bias<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Policies claiming neutrality often reproduce <strong>existing inequity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>How Polite Racism Shows Up<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Recruitment<\/strong>: fit > fairness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Schools &amp; workplaces<\/strong>: dysregulated enforcement of norms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Neighbourhood belonging<\/strong>: who is assumed to be \u201cout of place\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Communication<\/strong>: tone policing, silencing, dismissiveness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These actions are often considered \u201cnice\u201d but their impact is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Case Studies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Case Study 1: The \u2018Neutral\u2019 Recruitment Panel<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A \u201cfair\u201d interview process is used.
