It is racism old-fashioned, explicit, and harmful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cornwall Conservative Councillor Pauline Giles\u2019 comments about \u201cyoung black males flooding our country\u201d, her call for \u201cmass deportations\u201d, and her insistence that these individuals are \u201cjeopardising\u201d safety are not merely misguided; they are dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They represent a worldview in which <strong>Blackness is positioned as inherently criminal, foreign, and threatening,<\/strong> a worldview that has fuelled discrimination, violence, exclusion, and divisive politics for generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And for ethnically diverse people and for those with ethnically diverse children, partners, or families, the impact is not theoretical. It is visceral and personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Why this is racism: clearly, explicitly, unapologetically<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. She racialised the issue herself<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was asked why she singled out \u201cblack males\u201d, and her answer was:<br><strong>\u201cBecause they are [black], aren\u2019t they?\u201d<\/strong><br>This is the moment the mask slips. This is not about immigration, legality, or border procedures; she explicitly anchored danger to melanin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. She linked Blackness to criminality<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She suggested \u201cyoung girls\u201d were at risk specifically from \u201cpeople from these boats\u201d, despite <strong>no evidence<\/strong>, and despite Cornwall\u2019s own sexual assault cases involving white perpetrators, cases she had <em>not<\/em> commented on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This reveals a racialised threat narrative:<br><strong>White crimes = individual incidents.<br>Black people = collective threat.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. She relied on racist tropes of \u201cflooding\u201d and \u201cmasses\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Language such as \u201cflooding\u201d and \u201cmass deportation\u201d dehumanises people and mirrors xenophobic rhetoric historically used to justify exclusion, violence, and racial hierarchy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. She used the classic defence: \u201cI have friends of many colours\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Claiming multicultural friendships does not erase racism. Racism is seen in actions, narratives, and power not in who you take a photo with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. She spread misinformation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No small boats arrive in Cornwall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Her claims about crime rates are not supported by evidence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Her beliefs are shaped by biased media feeds and misinformation algorithms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Misinformation repeated by an elected official becomes normalised prejudice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What she is <em>really<\/em> saying, beneath the excuses<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strip away the justifications, and her statements assert that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Black people are a danger.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Black men are a threat to women.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Blackness is incompatible with Britishness.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Non-white people are not \u201cour\u201d people.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Britain is being overwhelmed by racial others.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Those are not neutral observations.<br>Those are the foundations of racist ideology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The harm caused to individuals, communities, and Britain<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Harm to ethnically diverse people<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her statements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increase fear and hostility towards Black men.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Undermine the safety of ethnically diverse residents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reinforce stereotypes used to justify discrimination in policing, employment, education, and housing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tell Black British people and their children that their skin colour marks them as a threat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not abstract. This translates into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Being stopped more by the police.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being profiled in shops.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being denied opportunities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being viewed with suspicion in public spaces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being told they don\u2019t belong.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Harm to people with ethnically diverse families<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parents raising ethnically diverse children hear comments like these and think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Are my children safe?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Will they be blamed for things they didn\u2019t do?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Will they be viewed as inherently dangerous?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Will my son be seen as a \u201cyoung black male\u201d before he is seen as a child?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This erodes mental health, belonging, and trust in public institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Harm to community cohesion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This kind of rhetoric:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fuels division and fear.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Makes Cornwall appear hostile to outsiders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discourages multicultural communities from visiting, settling, or contributing economically.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Undermines years of anti-racism and inclusion work by local organisations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Cohesion requires truth, trust, and belonging, all shattered by racist narratives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Harm to democracy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elected officials carry responsibility.<br>When they use racist rhetoric, it normalises prejudice and signals to the public that such views are acceptable within mainstream politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This corrodes confidence in local councils, political parties, and democratic processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So, how bad is this for a human being?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a Black child in Cornwall, this is devastating.<br>For a Black parent travelling home, this is frightening.<br>For a mixed-race family at the school gates, this is isolating.<br>For ethnically diverse workers, visitors, students, and citizens, this is dehumanising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not \u201cjust a comment\u201d.<br>This is the kind of language that leads to hate crimes, exclusion, discriminatory policies, and lifelong disadvantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the language that has historically justified violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is extremely bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What action must be taken by individuals, by employers, and by the government<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A. What individuals must do<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Challenge racist narratives<\/strong> when they arise, especially misinformation online.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Report racist posts<\/strong> to platforms and employers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Educate ourselves<\/strong> on how bias, media algorithms, and language shape belief.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Amplify the voices<\/strong> of ethnically diverse communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Intervene early<\/strong> when friends, family, or colleagues repeat harmful misinformation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>B. What employers (including councils) must do<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Investigate the incident under the <strong>code of conduct<\/strong> and <strong>anti-racism policies<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Implement <strong>mandatory anti-racism and cultural competency training<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Require councillors to undergo <strong>media literacy and misinformation training<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Publish findings and actions to maintain public trust.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suspend or remove officials who breach equality, impartiality, or duty of care standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>C.
