To be <em>anti-racist<\/em> is not a passive identity but an active, continuous practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It requires us to interrogate our own beliefs, challenge behaviours (including our own), and transform the cultures we influence, whether at home, at work, in education, online, or in our communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This blog uses two frameworks:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The RACIST Acronym<\/strong> \u2013 breaking down what racism truly looks like in behaviour, systems, and impact.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The ANTI-RACISM Framework<\/strong> \u2013 a guide for meaningful, sustained anti-racist action.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Understanding Racism: The RACIST Acronym<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To dismantle racism, we must name it clearly. The acronym <strong>RACIST<\/strong> helps us understand how racism operates at interpersonal, institutional, and structural levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-red-background-color has-background wp-element-button\">R \u2013 Racial Prejudice<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Pre-judging individuals based on race, skin colour, or ethnicity.<br>This includes stereotypes, assumptions, microaggressions, and biased expectations that shape how people are seen, assessed, or treated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-red-background-color has-background wp-element-button\">A \u2013 Advantage<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Racism maintains an advantage for some groups and a disadvantage for others.<br>It is reflected in unequal access to education, healthcare, employment, housing, safety, justice, and representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-red-background-color has-background wp-element-button\">C \u2013 Culture and Conditioning<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Racism is learned.<br>From childhood, people absorb messages from various sources, including the media, schooling, family narratives, and national histories. This conditioning fuels unconscious bias and normalises inequity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-red-background-color has-background wp-element-button\">I \u2013 Institutional Power<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Racism is not only about individuals; it is embedded in systems.<br>Policies, procedures, algorithms, recruitment, disciplinary processes, and leadership structures can all reproduce racial harm without intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-red-background-color has-background wp-element-button\">S \u2013 Silence<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Silence enables racism to thrive.<br>Not challenging discriminatory jokes, comments, or decisions protects perpetrators rather than victims. Silence is complicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-red-background-color has-background wp-element-button\">T \u2013 Trauma<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Racism causes lifelong trauma \u2013 emotional, psychological, social, and physical.<br>Repeated exposure to racial injustice affects well-being, confidence, safety, and opportunities. Understanding this trauma is fundamental to anti-racist practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>How to Be Anti-Racist: The ANTI-RACISM Framework<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each letter of <strong>ANTI-RACISM<\/strong> explores a core principle and action pathway for becoming actively anti-racist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-green-cyan-background-color has-background wp-element-button\">A \u2013 Acknowledge Reality<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Anti-racism begins with truth.<br><\/strong>Acknowledge that racism exists, that it causes real harm, and that no one is neutral. Recognise the ways systems have privileged some and excluded others. Acknowledgement is not guilt; it is responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-green-cyan-background-color has-background wp-element-button\">N \u2013 Notice Bias and Behaviour<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Pay attention to thoughts, media, language, reactions, and decisions.<br><strong>Notice:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>who is included or excluded<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>who is believed or dismissed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whose voices dominate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how stereotypes shape responses<br>Developing racial self-awareness is essential for behavioural change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-green-cyan-background-color has-background wp-element-button\">T \u2013 Take Responsibility<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Anti-racism requires ownership, not defensiveness.<br><strong>Take responsibility for:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>learning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>unlearning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>acting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>challenging harm<br>When you get something wrong (and you will), repair it rather than retreat. Accountability is a practice, not a punishment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-green-cyan-background-color has-background wp-element-button\">I \u2013 Intervene<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Be the person who speaks up.<\/strong><br>Challenge racist remarks, unequal practices, biased decisions, and discriminatory systems. Intervening can look like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>asking questions (\u201cWhat evidence supports that decision?\u201d)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>redirecting conversations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reporting misconduct<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>supporting the person targeted<br>Silence never creates equity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp; (Hyphen) \u2013 Pause, Reflect, Connect<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The hyphen is a bridge.<br><\/strong>It symbolises the transition between understanding and action.<br>Use this pause to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reflect on privilege and impact<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>connect with others across differences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>centre lived experience<br>Anti-racism is relational; it grows through conversation, humility, and solidarity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-green-cyan-background-color has-background wp-element-button\">R \u2013 Re-Educate Continuously<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Being anti-racist is lifelong learning.<br>Read widely, listen deeply, and engage with voices across communities. Learn about colonial histories, policies, intersectionality, and systemic inequalities. Education is a protective factor against repeating harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-green-cyan-background-color has-background wp-element-button\">A \u2013 Amplify Marginalised Voices<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Make space and share space.<br>Amplify Black, Brown, and global majority voices in meetings, curricula, panels, leadership, bookshelves, and decision-making. Amplification is not tokenism when done with ethics and intention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-green-cyan-background-color has-background wp-element-button\">C \u2013 Challenge Systems<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Anti-racism is not only personal; it is structural.<br>Challenge:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>unfair policies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>biased recruitment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>disproportionate outcomes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>representation gaps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>disciplinary disparities<br>System change happens when individuals push institutions to evolve.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-green-cyan-background-color has-background wp-element-button\">I \u2013 Invest in Equity<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Commit time, energy, funding, and influence to anti-racist practice.<br>Invest in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>training<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>community partnerships<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>equitable hiring<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>leadership pathways<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>culturally responsive curriculum<br>Equity requires resources, not slogans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-green-cyan-background-color has-background wp-element-button\">S \u2013 Stand in Solidarity<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Solidarity is active, not symbolic.<br><\/strong>Show up for others, advocate for justice, support those experiencing racism, and build alliances across communities. Solidarity rejects performative gestures in favour of real, sustained connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-green-cyan-background-color has-background wp-element-button\">M \u2013 Model the Change<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Anti-racism becomes culture when people model it daily.<br>In your workplace, home, classroom, organisation, and online presence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>be consistent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be accountable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be visible in your values<br>People learn from what you demonstrate, not what you declare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Conclusion: Anti-Racism Is a Daily Commitment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anti-racism is not an identity, a workshop, a badge, or a trend.<br>It is a commitment to equity, courage, and humanity in every space we influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By understanding what racism really is and practising the principles of ANTI-RACISM, we can create environments where everyone belongs, thrives, and is treated with dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Real change starts with one person deciding to act differently.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Collective change happens when that person is <em>all of us<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Racism is not simply an attitude held by a few extreme individuals; it is a system woven through societies, institutions, and everyday interactions.
