Although the histories differ, the core message is the same:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fairness matters.<br>Truth matters.<br>Action matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This February guide focuses on the <strong>USA context<\/strong>, while also signposting how UK organisations can embed learning into their Equality Act duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What Is Racism?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Racism is when people are treated unfairly because of their:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Race<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skin colour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ethnicity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>National origin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Racism is not just about hurt feelings.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Racism happens when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People are treated worse because of their race<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Systems create unequal outcomes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Power is used unfairly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Racism can affect:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Education<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Housing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Healthcare<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Policing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wealth and opportunity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Racism is about <strong>patterns across systems<\/strong>, not just one rude comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What Racism Is NOT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Racism is NOT:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Someone disagreeing with you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being asked to consider inequality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not always being centred<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeling uncomfortable in a discussion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Discomfort can be part of learning.<br>Oppression is about long-term structural harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What Does the Evidence Show in the United States? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data across decades shows consistent racial disparities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wealth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The median wealth of white families is significantly higher than that of Black families.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Historical policies such as redlining and housing discrimination contributed to this gap.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Housing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>White Americans are more likely to own homes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Black families were systematically excluded from mortgage access for generations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Employment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Studies show that CVs with \u201cwhite-sounding\u201d names receive more callbacks than identical CVs with \u201cBlack-sounding\u201d names.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Occupational segregation persists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Criminal Justice<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Black Americans are stopped, searched and incarcerated at higher rates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sentencing disparities have been widely documented.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Health<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Black Americans experience higher maternal mortality rates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Life expectancy differs along racial lines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Structural barriers affect healthcare access.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This does <strong>not<\/strong> mean every white person has an easy life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means being white is not, in itself, a structural disadvantage in American society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no evidence of a system that harms white people as a racial group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The Impact of Racism<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Racism causes real harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Mental Health<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Anxiety<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stress<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Depression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hypervigilance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeling unsafe<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Physical Health<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Higher rates of some chronic illnesses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maternal mortality disparities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shorter average life expectancy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Education and Employment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fewer opportunities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower pay<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Underrepresentation in leadership<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Daily Life<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Being followed in shops<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being profiled<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being stereotyped<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being treated as \u201cless than\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This cumulative harm is known as <strong>racial trauma<\/strong>.<strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What Is Racial Trauma?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Racial trauma is the psychological and emotional harm caused by repeated exposure to racism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can feel like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Always being on guard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeling exhausted from explaining racism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Worrying about how you are perceived<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being reduced to stereotypes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Children and young people can experience this too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Racism affects identity, belonging and safety from an early age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why Do Some People Say, \u201cReverse Racism\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people use the term when they feel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Social change is happening quickly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are not always centred<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Equality initiatives feel unfamiliar<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, racism is not simply prejudice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is <strong>prejudice plus systemic power<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For \u201creverse racism\u201d to exist at a societal level, there would need to be:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Laws disadvantaging white people because they are white<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long-standing institutional systems harming white communities as a racial group<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Measurable structural disadvantage tied specifically to whiteness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no evidence of this in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Individual prejudice can happen in any direction.<br>Systemic racism is about structures and power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Correcting inequality is not discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What Is Anti-Racism?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anti-racism is active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recognising racism exists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understanding how systems create unequal outcomes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Challenging discriminatory behaviour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Working to change policies and structures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It moves from neutrality to responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saying \u201cI\u2019m not racist\u201d is passive.<br>Being anti-racist requires action.<strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>How To Be Anti-Racist<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Learn<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Study the history of slavery, segregation and civil rights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understand how policy shapes inequality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Listen to lived experiences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Listen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When someone describes racism:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do not dismiss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not minimise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not centre yourself<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Say:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hear you.\u201d<br>\u201cThank you for telling me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Speak Up<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Challenge racist language<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intervene safely<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support those affected<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Silence protects injustice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Reflect<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ask:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What assumptions do I carry?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who is missing from leadership?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who benefits from the status quo?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Support Structural Change<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Equitable recruitment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diverse leadership pipelines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anti-discrimination enforcement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data transparency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Systems must change, not just attitudes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key Messages<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2714 Racism is about systems and power.<br>\u2714 Evidence shows structural racial inequality in the USA.<br>\u2714 Equality efforts are not discrimination.<br>\u2714 Anti-racism requires action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>For UK Professionals: Preparing for Black History Month in October<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although this guide focuses on the USA context during February, UK organisations have legal responsibilities under:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Equality Act 2010<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What the Equality Act 2010 Requires<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Race is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organisations must not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discriminate directly or indirectly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Harass<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Victimise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They must ensure fair access to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Employment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Education<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What the Public Sector Equality Duty Requires: <\/strong>Public bodies must have <strong>due regard<\/strong> to the need to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eliminate discrimination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advance equality of opportunity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foster good relations between groups<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Black History Month in October is not simply a celebration month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For UK public bodies, it is an opportunity to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Review race equality data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Examine recruitment and progression gaps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assess representation in leadership<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consult communities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strengthen race equality objectives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>BHM should connect to policy, governance and measurable outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Moving From Celebration to Compliance and Courage: <\/strong>For UK schools, colleges, local authorities and charities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Link BHM activity to Equality Objectives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evidence impact in governance reports<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engage student or service-user voice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Embed learning across the year, not just October<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Equality is not a one-month event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a statutory and moral responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For Children and Young People<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stand up for classmates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Challenge stereotypes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn about Black history respectfully<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Celebrate culture with understanding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Fairness matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You deserve a world where everyone is treated with dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And building that world starts with truth, courage and action.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What Is Racism?
