They are part of a wider pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reports from the Community Security Trust continue to show record levels of antisemitism. Locally, Jewish communities have reported heightened fear, increased security presence, and changes to daily life whether that\u2019s removing visible signs of identity, avoiding certain areas, or questioning whether it is safe to speak openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This blog is not just a reflection on a documentary.<br>It is a reflection on a lived reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>\u201cWhy Are British Jews Afraid?\u201d \u2013 Listening, Learning, and Acting Together<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last night, I joined over 100 people on a Zoom watch party hosted by a grassroots network to view a BBC Panorama documentary exploring antisemitism in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What unfolded was more than a programme.<br>It was a shared space of reflection, frustration, solidarity and, for many, recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants joined from across the UK and internationally London, Greater Manchester, Israel, Jerusalem, Sweden, Ireland. What became clear very quickly is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Antisemitism is not theoretical. It is shaping how Jewish people live their lives, every day.<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What the Documentary Highlighted and What It Missed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme explored:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>sharp rise in antisemitism since October 2023<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The role of <strong>social media in amplifying hate<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>normalisation of hostile and dehumanising language<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Concerns around <strong>public safety, protests, and policing<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>emotional toll<\/strong> fear, anxiety, exhaustion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, many watching felt it did not go far enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It felt, in parts, <strong>too cautious for the scale of the issue<\/strong>.<br>Too limited in unpacking the depth, history, and impact of antisemitism.<br>Too quiet where urgency was needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As reflected in the discussion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou wouldn\u2019t believe it\u2019s at crisis point by that BBC programme.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Lived Experience: The Reality Behind the Headlines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most powerful part of the evening was not the documentary it was the voices in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People spoke openly about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A shift in safety<\/strong>\u2014something has changed, and people feel it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Historical echoes<\/strong>\u2014references to the 1930s made with genuine concern, not exaggeration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Silencing<\/strong>\u2014Jewish voices dismissed or minimised<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Isolation<\/strong>\u2014and the relief of finding others who understand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Frustration with institutions<\/strong>\u2014media, government, and systems not keeping pace<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>One comment captured the urgency:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rise in antisemitism began immediately after October 7th, before any response, highlighting that hatred exists independently of subsequent events. <strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Intersectionality Matters: There Is No Single Jewish Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To utterly understand antisemitism, we must understand <strong>how it is experienced differently across identities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jewish Women<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Face <strong>gendered antisemitism<\/strong>, including sexualised abuse online<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Often carry <strong>community and family safety concerns<\/strong>, particularly for children<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience <strong>intersection with misogyny<\/strong>, amplifying harm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jewish Men<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More likely to be <strong>visibly identifiable targets<\/strong> (e.g. wearing kippah)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience <strong>physical intimidation and violence at higher rates<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Face stereotypes linked to power, control, and conspiracy narratives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jewish Children &amp; Young People<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Experience bullying in schools and online<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feel pressure to <strong>hide identity or disengage from discussions<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigate complex narratives without always feeling safe to challenge them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Older Jewish Adults<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Carry <strong>intergenerational trauma<\/strong>, including Holocaust memory<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience current events as <strong>repetition, not new phenomena<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>May feel particularly vulnerable and isolated<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Black and Brown Jewish Communities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Experience <strong>racism and antisemitism simultaneously<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Often feel <strong>invisible in mainstream narratives<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Face exclusion from both Jewish and wider community conversations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are disproportionately impacted by <strong>intersectional discrimination<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Antisemitism does not operate in isolation it intersects, compounds, and evolves.<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The Data Behind the Fear<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wider evidence reinforces what people are feeling:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Record antisemitic incidents reported by Community Security Trust<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased <strong>security at schools, synagogues, and community spaces<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Growth in <strong>online hate and misinformation<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Behaviour changes <strong>self-censorship, reduced visibility, avoidance<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not just about statistics.<br>It is about <strong>freedom, identity, and belonging<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Why This Matters for All of Us<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Antisemitism is often described as a \u201cJewish issue.\u201d<br>It is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a <strong>test of our society\u2019s commitment to equality, truth, and safety<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When antisemitism rises:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Misinformation thrives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hate becomes normalised<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other forms of racism often follow<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What Needs to Happen Next<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Employers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Treat antisemitism as a <strong>core EDI issue<\/strong>, not an afterthought<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide <strong>specific training on modern antisemitism<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Act decisively on incidents not just acknowledge them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support Jewish staff visibly and consistently<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Education (Schools, Colleges, Universities)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Teach <strong>Jewish history, identity, and antisemitism accurately<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Equip staff to manage <strong>complex, sensitive discussions<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create environments where Jewish students feel <strong>safe and represented<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Communities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Speak out\u2014<strong>silence enables harm<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build <strong>cross-community solidarity<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Challenge misinformation confidently<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Media &amp; Public Institutions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Report responsibly and accurately<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid <strong>false equivalence and harmful framing<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Centre <strong>lived experience alongside analysis<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Summary of the Evening<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The watch party was not just about watching a programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Connection<\/strong> \u2013 people finding each other across cities and countries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Validation<\/strong> \u2013 recognising shared experiences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Frustration<\/strong> \u2013 that the issue is still not fully understood<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hope<\/strong> \u2013 that conversations like this can lead to change<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite technical issues, what stood out was <strong>collective determination<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People stayed.<br>They engaged.<br>They cared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Final Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a community tells us they feel unsafe, unheard, or marginalised, we must listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not defensively.<br>Not selectively.<br>But fully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because inclusion is not evaluated when it is easy.<br>It is evaluated when people say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cWe are not okay.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what we do next defines who we are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, listen to learn, to understand to empathise and not to minimise people\u2019s lived experiences<strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Annex: Employer &amp; Senior Leader Checklist<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Legal &amp; Policy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure compliance with the Equality Act 2010<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include antisemitism explicitly within EDI and anti-harassment policies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Address third-party harassment risks (clients, service users, public)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Culture &amp; Leadership<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Publicly acknowledge antisemitism when it occurs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid silence\u2014issue clear, values-led statements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Model inclusive language and behaviour<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Workforce Support<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provide safe, confidential reporting mechanisms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offer wellbeing support recognising cultural and religious context<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engage with Jewish staff networks or representatives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Training &amp; Awareness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Deliver training on <strong>modern antisemitism and intersectionality<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Equip managers to respond confidently and appropriately<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Challenge myths, stereotypes, and misinformation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Risk &amp;
