SEND. SEMH. SpLD. LDD. BESD. EBD. AuDHD. DAMP. ESSENCE. NEET.

For many professionals, these terms have become part of everyday language. Each was introduced with good intentions to identify needs, improve understanding and enable access to support. Yet, collectively, they have created an unintended consequence: confusion.

When Labels Become Barriers

The reality is that the same individual can receive different labels depending on where they enter the system.

A child may be identified as:

SEMH because their behaviour is the most visible concern.

SpLD because their learning differences are recognised first.

Or they may not receive any identification at all.

The child has not changed, but the label has. Unfortunately, so too may the support they receive.

Too often, labels reflect the pathway into a service rather than the person’s actual needs.

We Need to Move Beyond Categories

Diagnostic categories and educational classifications have an important role. They can provide access to services, legal protections, and a shared language. However, problems arise when labels become the focus rather than the individual.

Labels can:

Group together people with vastly different strengths and challenges.

Create artificial thresholds that determine who receives support.

Exclude those whose needs do not fit neatly into predefined categories.

This can result in support being driven by diagnosis rather than by what will genuinely help someone succeed.

The Same Label Doesn’t Mean the Same Needs

One of the biggest misconceptions is that everyone with the same label needs the same support. In reality:

Two people with ADHD may require completely different workplace adjustments.

Two autistic pupils may have entirely different communication, sensory or learning needs.

Someone with dyslexia may need similar adjustments to another individual without a formal diagnosis but with comparable literacy challenges.

Labels may describe part of a person’s experience, but they should never dictate the support they receive.

Needs Change Throughout Life

Needs are not static. As people grow and move through different stages of life, their strengths, challenges, and support requirements evolve. Our experiences are shaped by far more than a diagnosis. Factors such as:

Stable housing

Access to healthcare

Positive relationships

Educational experiences

Employment opportunities

Inclusive environments

All influence outcomes. Someone who thrives in one environment may struggle in another. Likewise, someone who previously required significant support may become increasingly independent with the right adjustments in place. This is why support should be reviewed regularly rather than assuming a diagnosis tells the whole story for life.

Equality Means Focusing on Need

From an equality and inclusion perspective, the goal should not simply be better labelling. It should be better understanding. A truly inclusive approach asks:

What barriers is this person experiencing?

What strengths do they bring?

What reasonable adjustments will help them succeed?

How can we remove unnecessary obstacles rather than expecting individuals to fit the system?

This approach benefits everyone not just those with a formal diagnosis.

Moving Towards Needs-Led Support

As awareness of neurodiversity continues to grow, our thinking must evolve too.

Rather than asking, “What label does this person have?”, we should be asking:

“What does this person need to thrive?”

When organisations, schools and employers shift from label-led thinking to needs-led support, they create environments that are fairer, more inclusive, and more effective for everyone.

Understanding people not simply categorising them is where meaningful inclusion begins.

In education, health, employment, and social care, we have become increasingly familiar with a growing list of acronyms and labels.
