This reality was sharply brought into focus during the Brexit discussions, which exposed a range of attitudes towards immigrants, often revealing underlying prejudices and misconceptions.

Living in an area with a predominantly white British population, many immigrants found themselves in conversations where locals expressed their frustrations about immigration. These interactions often culminated in the same, repeated sentiment:

“When we say immigrants, we obviously don’t mean you.”

This statement, intended to be comforting, actually highlighted a deeper issue.

The Definition of an Immigrant

According to the dictionary, an immigrant is: “A person who has come to a different country in order to live there permanently.”

This definition is straightforward, yet the Brexit discussions revealed a complex reality where certain immigrants were more readily accepted than others. For many, being an immigrant in the UK meant facing assumptions and biases, even if they were highly skilled and spoke fluent English.

The Underlying Issues

The Brexit debates often exposed a sentiment that wasn’t just about immigration but about deeper issues of racism and prejudice. The suggestion that some immigrants were more acceptable than others was rooted in superficial qualities like skin colour and language proficiency.

The Windrush Generation: A Harrowing Parallel

This treatment is strikingly similar to the experiences of the Windrush generation. The Windrush scandal, brought to public attention in 2018, revealed the traumatic experiences faced by many Caribbean immigrants who arrived in the UK between 1948 and 1971. Despite living and working in the UK for decades, many were wrongfully detained, denied legal rights, threatened with deportation, and in at least 83 cases, wrongly deported from the UK by the Home Office. This scandal exposed the deep-seated issues within British immigration policies and highlighted the systemic racial discrimination faced by immigrants.

The Traumatic Legacy

For many, the trauma of the Windrush scandal continues to resonate. The policies embedded in British law since 2018 have perpetuated a climate of fear and uncertainty among immigrants, revealing that the struggle for acceptance and recognition is far from over. The emotional and psychological impact on those affected by these policies is profound, often resulting in a sense of betrayal and displacement.

The Perception of Inclusion

For many immigrants, the UK was seen as an open-minded, welcoming place. However, the Brexit discussions and the Windrush scandal shattered this perception for many, revealing that acceptance often hinged on fitting a certain mould. This realisation was particularly jarring for those who had integrated into British culture, only to find that their acceptance was conditional.

The Reality of the Service Industry

The service industry in the UK heavily relies on immigrant workers. During the Brexit period, the departure of many immigrants due to visa issues severely impacted this sector. Despite the critical role immigrants played, there was a glaring lack of understanding or appreciation for their contributions.

Facing Prejudice

Brexit and the Windrush scandal brought out a range of reactions from the public, with some individuals expressing their frustrations directly to immigrants. Ironically, those who were most likely to “steal” jobs in the competitive job market were often seen as less of a threat due to their education and perceived integration.

A Shifting Identity

For many immigrants, these events were a turning point. It led to a deeper reflection on identity and belonging. The realisation that one could never be truly seen as “British” despite years of effort to fit in was both disheartening and liberating.

Finding Community

In the wake of these challenges, many immigrants found solace and understanding within international communities. These groups offered a shared experience of navigating life in a new country, facing both welcome and unwelcome sentiments.

The Expatriate Label: A Distinct Privilege

In conversations about immigration, a subtle yet significant distinction often arises between the term’s “expat” and “immigrant.” The word “expat,” short for expatriate, is defined as “a person who lives outside their native country.” However, in practice, this term is predominantly reserved for white individuals from Western countries living abroad, while people ethnically diverse people are more commonly referred to as immigrants, regardless of their origin or status.

This distinction is not just linguistic but deeply rooted in societal perceptions and biases. While expatriates are often seen as adventurous, skilled professionals contributing to the global economy, immigrants frequently face stereotypes of being unskilled, unwanted, or even burdensome. The term “expat” carries with it a sense of privilege and status that is rarely afforded to immigrants, even when they possess equal or superior qualifications.

The differential treatment of white expatriates versus non-white immigrants underscores a broader issue of racial and ethnic discrimination. White expatriates moving to countries such as those in Europe, Asia, Africa, or America are typically met with admiration and respect. They are often provided with better living conditions, higher salaries, and more opportunities compared to local residents and other immigrants. In contrast, individuals from ethnically diverse backgrounds moving to Western countries often face significant barriers to acceptance, ranging from legal obstacles to social prejudice.

This dichotomy in terminology and treatment reflects and perpetuates a systemic inequality that privileges certain groups over others based on superficial characteristics such as skin colour. It highlights the need for a more inclusive and equitable approach to how we view and treat individuals who choose to live and work in countries other than their own, recognising the inherent value and dignity of all people, regardless of their racial or ethnic background.

The Silver Lining: Allyship and Support

Despite the challenges, these events also highlighted the best in people. There were many who stood up for immigrants’ rights and worked tirelessly to support those affected by the changes. This period revealed true friendships and allies, showcasing a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Allyship is crucial in the fight against racial discrimination and xenophobia. Supporting those who face discrimination because of their national origin or skin colour involves not only standing in solidarity but actively working to dismantle the structures that perpetuate inequality.

Conclusion

The UK remains home for many immigrants, even though their journey is marked by both acceptance and rejection. The experiences of the Brexit period and the Windrush scandal serve as a reminder of the importance of understanding and embracing diversity. We must continue to support each other and advocate for policies that promote equality and justice for all.

Do you have an intercultural story or experience you want to share?
