The Misguided Battle Cry Against Equality"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When I hear people clamouring to &#8220;end EDI&#8221; (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion), it\u2019s impossible not to feel a pang of frustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a phrase often cloaked in the guise of fairness and meritocracy, but it rings hollow to those of us who live the realities that EDI aims to address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what I hear when someone says, &#8220;Let\u2019s end EDI&#8221;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;It\u2019s a meritocracy! Just work harder.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This statement is a profound misunderstanding of the barriers that EDI seeks to dismantle. It assumes a level playing field where none exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Equality Act 2010 is not an inconvenience; it\u2019s a necessity to ensure that meritocracy can actually function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without acknowledging the systemic biases and obstacles that many face, the call to &#8220;just work harder&#8221; is an insult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;The Equality Act 2010, that doesn\u2019t really matter.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The disregard for the Equality Act 2010 is a testament to how little some understand the daily struggles of marginalised groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This legislation is crucial for protecting the rights and opportunities of those who are too often sidelined. Ignoring it means ignoring the very real issues that EDI aims to address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;Language doesn\u2019t need to evolve.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Language is powerful. The words we choose can either uplift or demean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resistance to evolving language is a refusal to acknowledge the importance of respect and inclusivity. Language shapes our reality; refusing to let it grow means refusing to let society grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;I\u2019m not racist, it\u2019s got nothing to do with me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This defence misses the point entirely. Racism is not just about individual acts of prejudice but about systemic inequities that affect entire groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By saying it\u2019s not their problem, people absolve themselves of the responsibility to contribute to change, perpetuating the status quo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;It\u2019s banter, not bullying. You\u2019re too sensitive.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dismissing harmful behaviour as &#8220;banter&#8221; trivialises the impact it has on individuals. It\u2019s a way of silencing those who speak out against discrimination and harassment, suggesting that their feelings and experiences are invalid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;There\u2019s nothing institutional, it\u2019s just a few bad apples.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cbad apple\u201d theory is a convenient myth. It allows institutions to deny responsibility for pervasive issues, blaming individuals instead of addressing systemic problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>True EDI work means looking at the structures that allow these &#8220;bad apples&#8221; to thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;Your identity is purely ideological.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reducing someone\u2019s identity to ideology dismisses their lived experience and humanity. It\u2019s a way to delegitimise the challenges they face and the protections they need. Identity is not an abstract concept; it\u2019s a core part of who we are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;You don\u2019t deserve that position, you\u2019re mediocre, a diversity hire.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is perhaps one of the most damaging accusations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It suggests that people from marginalised groups can\u2019t earn their achievements through merit, undermining their confidence and devaluing their contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It perpetuates the very biases that EDI initiatives strive to eliminate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Real Message Behind Anti-EDI Sentiments<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a Black person, when I hear people using EDI as a slur, what I really hear is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You\u2019re not really welcome.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a subtle but powerful way of saying that efforts to create a fairer, more inclusive society are unwelcome and unnecessary. It\u2019s a way of maintaining the status quo and keeping the doors closed to those who don\u2019t fit the traditional mould.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pursuit of Equality Is Not Optional<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Equality should never be viewed as optional. It\u2019s a fundamental right. EDI is not about giving unfair advantages but about ensuring that everyone has a fair chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s about recognising and addressing the historical and systemic barriers that prevent true meritocracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To end EDI is to turn a blind eye to injustice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s to ignore the voices of those who have been fighting for a seat at the table for far too long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a call to regress, not progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s not end EDI.
