On Monday, 12th August, a horrific attack took place in Leicester Square, London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A white male attacker assaulted an 11-year-old girl and her mother, stabbing the young girl eight times. Miraculously, despite her serious injuries, she is not in a critical condition. The attacker was subdued by a security guard, Abdullah, who selflessly intervened to save the child\u2019s life. As he later told The Guardian, \u201cI just saw a kid getting stabbed and I just tried to save her. It\u2019s my duty to just save them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This attack, shocking in its brutality, is the latest in a string of violent incidents involving young girls. It comes only weeks after the tragic event in Southport on 29th July, where three young girls were killed at a dance event. Following that attack, social media was awash with misinformation, wrongly identifying the perpetrator as a Muslim immigrant. This false narrative was amplified by far-right figures like Nigel Farage and Tommy Robinson, leading to a wave of racist riots across England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the aftermath of the Southport attack, mosques were attacked, hotels housing asylum seekers were targeted, and racist and anti-immigrant slogans were spray-painted across buildings. Britain\u2019s Muslim and ethnic minority communities were left living in fear. The rioters, a small but vocal minority, were labelled as having \u201clegitimate concerns\u201d by some politicians and media outlets. These concerns supposedly centred around immigration, with claims that immigrants are responsible for violence, economic woes, and threats to public safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But let\u2019s be clear: these so-called \u201clegitimate concerns\u201d are nothing more than thinly veiled racism and xenophobia. There is no evidence linking knife crime to ethnicity, and immigrants are not to blame for the UK\u2019s economic challenges. Instead, these issues are the result of neoliberal capitalism, which has widened the gap between the rich and poor, and hollowed out public services that could help prevent such tragedies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The narrative pushed by far-right populists and their allies in the media is both misleading and dangerous. They scapegoat immigrants and ethnically diverse people to deflect from the real issues facing the UK, such as economic inequality, wage stagnation, and the mental health crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This brings us back to the Leicester Square attack. The man who committed this heinous act is also an immigrant, a Romanian national. Yet, there were no riots, no widespread outrage, no calls for action. Why? Because the attacker is white. Because the hero who stopped him is ethnically diverse. Because this incident doesn\u2019t fit the racist narrative that some in our society are so quick to embrace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If those who rioted after the Southport attack were genuinely concerned about the safety of women and girls, they would be just as outraged by this attack. They would be protesting against the epidemic of male violence in the UK, which affects women and girls of all backgrounds. They would be calling for better mental health services, which have been decimated by years of austerity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they aren\u2019t. Instead, their silence speaks volumes. It reveals that their true motivation isn\u2019t the protection of women and girls, but the perpetuation of a racist ideology that seeks to divide and scapegoat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
