A new report by the <strong>Runnymede Trust<\/strong> and the <strong>Health Foundation<\/strong> makes this clearer than ever: <strong>racism is a social determinant of health<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From housing conditions to employment outcomes, people of colour in the UK are living with the health impacts of systemic, institutional and interpersonal racism. These aren&#8217;t abstract ideas\u2014they show up in lived experiences, health disparities, and life expectancy data. This report does the work of connecting the dots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key Findings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Health inequalities have deep racial roots:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People of Bangladeshi, Pakistani, and Black Caribbean backgrounds experience <strong>higher rates of diagnosed ill health<\/strong> than white people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-reported health outcomes diverge from age 30 and worsen with age for many ethnic groups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Racism in employment:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Black and minority ethnic workers are <strong>more likely to be unemployed or in insecure, low-paid roles<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Women of colour are <strong>75% more likely<\/strong> than white women to experience racism at work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>ethnicity pay gap<\/strong> remains significant, with Bangladeshi workers earning on average <strong>17.5% less<\/strong> than their white British counterparts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Racism in housing:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People of colour are more likely to live in <strong>overcrowded, poor-quality housing<\/strong> and have less access to green space.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communities of colour are disproportionately affected by homelessness and at risk of community displacement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wealth gaps compound disadvantage:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>median wealth of White British households<\/strong> is ten times higher than that of Black African households.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bangladeshi and Black African families are more likely to have <strong>less than \u00a31,000 in savings<\/strong> and face persistent financial precarity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Racism is Stressful And Stress Makes Us Sick<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report also highlights the health toll of racism itself. People of colour experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Higher levels of <strong>stress, anxiety and depression<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greater exposure to <strong>physiological \u2018weathering\u2019<\/strong>\u2014the long-term physical effects of living under constant strain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unequal access to healthcare due to <strong>discrimination, language barriers, and profiling<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What Needs to Change<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t just a data issue, it\u2019s a justice issue. The report calls for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Embedding racial equity<\/strong> in policymaking around employment, wealth, and housing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Co-production<\/strong> with communities of colour to develop meaningful solutions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Improved data collection<\/strong> to track outcomes and address disparities.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What EDUK Is Doing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re committed to anchoring EDI in all we do through our training, advocacy, resources and events. This report strengthens the case for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Centring <strong>anti-racism in health and social care training<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supporting <strong>inclusive policies and equitable recruitment<\/strong> across sectors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Advocating for lived experience-led decision-making<\/strong>, especially in public health and housing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Final Word:<\/strong><br>Racism doesn\u2019t just live in slurs or headlines, it lives in policies, pay slips, postcodes and pension pots.
