It doesn\u2019t rely on skin colour or biology; it focuses on perceived cultural differences and the belief that \u201cthey\u201d don\u2019t belong. It\u2019s subtle. Often unconscious. And dangerously divisive. It\u2019s when \u201cfitting in\u201d becomes code for \u201cbe like us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">What\u2019s the Impact?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Segregation: People live \u201cparallel lives\u201d, without shared spaces, schools or dialogue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Institutional racism: Systems fail to treat all equally. The Macpherson Report (1999), after Stephen Lawrence\u2019s murder, exposed how systemic and unintentional racism can persist.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Backlash: Equality efforts can provoke claims of \u201creverse discrimination\u201d \u2013 a common tactic of new racism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">The Trigger Point<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Riots in Oldham and Bradford in 2001 revealed what happens when young people feel excluded and unheard. This led to the Community Cohesion agenda. Fast forward to 2024, and Britain again witnessed unrest. Riots across several UK cities were fuelled by frustration over inequality, injustice, and lack of trust in institutions. These events were a wake-up call: without inclusion, tension builds\u2014and the cycle of division continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">What is \u201cCommunity Cohesion\u201d?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Community Cohesion seeks to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Build a shared sense of belonging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Value people\u2019s diverse backgrounds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure equal life chances<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage positive contact between communities\u2014at work, in schools, and in neighbourhoods<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s about diversity within unity\u2014not assimilation, but shared identity and purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">The Power of Diverse Friendships<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Socialising across difference is a powerful way to counter new racism. Diverse friendships help us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Develop cultural awareness and curiosity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understand intersecting identities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communicate inclusively and affirmingly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build trust with marginalised communities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deliver empathetic, effective, equitable services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These relationships sharpen our professional practice and make us better allies. They help us lead with compassion, listen without assumption, and challenge discrimination from a place of connection\u2014not charity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">What\u2019s the Solution?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Common In-group Identity Model shows we\u2019re less biased when we see others as part of \u201cour group\u201d, not \u201ctheir group\u201d. This means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Creating shared goals and values<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encouraging meaningful inter-group contact<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognising dual identities: being both \u201cBritish\u201d and \u201cMuslim\u201d, \u201cLGBTQ+\u201d and \u201cChristian\u201d, \u201cBlack\u201d and \u201cEnglish\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Britishness as Inclusive Identity: Britishness can be a shared identity if inclusive\u2014not a tool to divide. No one should be forced to choose between their heritage and being British.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Reflective Questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For Individuals<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do I hold assumptions about other cultures I\u2019ve never questioned?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have I avoided speaking up about racism out of fear?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do I gravitate toward people who share my background?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I engaging with people different from me?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do I avoid difficult conversations even though I see myself as \u201cnot racist\u201d?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For Organisations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Does our workplace reflect the communities we serve?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is diversity visible in leadership?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do we create spaces for cross-cultural connection?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are our policies proactive or just reactive?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have we reviewed recruitment and culture through an anti-racist lens?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For Allyship<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Am I an ally when it\u2019s hard or only when it\u2019s safe?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do I centre the voices of those impacted by racism?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do I respond to new racism in daily practice?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do I call people in with care, and call out when necessary?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I promoting unity without demanding sameness?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For Community Cohesion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are young people in my community seen, heard, and included?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do we have shared community spaces that encourage interaction?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do local services reflect the diversity of the population?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are schools promoting respect for all backgrounds and identities?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do we challenge narratives that position difference as danger?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For Individuals In and Out of Work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do I feel I belong in the spaces I work or live in?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have I faced or witnessed discrimination in the job market?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I treated with respect regardless of my background or status?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do I feel empowered to challenge inequality?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have I accessed opportunities for learning about inclusion and anti-racism?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Final Thought<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Racism has changed but it hasn\u2019t gone away. To build truly inclusive communities, we need courageous conversations, shared values, and systems designed for equity not just intention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s not just live alongside each other.
