A <strong>2022 YouGov survey<\/strong> found that <strong>70%<\/strong> of trans people had experienced significant anxiety or depression due to delays in gender-affirming care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once engaged, individuals often have to wait <strong>12+ months between appointments<\/strong>, and it can take <strong>five or more years<\/strong> to meet the evidentiary requirements to apply for a GRC, such as proving they have \u201clived in their gender\u201d for two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preparing the application alone can take <strong>multiple days<\/strong> of gathering documents, letters, and records deeply personal material that\u2019s handed over to a panel of strangers empowered to assess if someone is \u201ctrans enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Administrative Burden<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legal test for a GRC is not simply a formality. They ignore the lived realities of thousands of trans people navigating a hostile environment just to access recognition, dignity, and the legal right to exist as themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong>Stonewall UK<\/strong>, only around <strong>5,000 GRCs<\/strong> have been granted since the Gender Recognition Act came into force in 2004 despite estimates that there are <strong>200,000\u2013500,000 trans people<\/strong> in the UK. The inaccessibility and gatekeeping embedded in the system are part of the reason why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Call for Honesty and Reform<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s time to drop the myths.
