It seems inclusive. It sounds polite. It tries to group together everyone who isn\u2019t White under one collective umbrella. But let\u2019s pause and ask: <strong>inclusive of what, exactly?<\/strong> And <strong>at what cost?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>White is a Colour Too<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The phrase \u201cPeople of Colour\u201d implicitly positions <strong>White as the norm<\/strong>, the default. Everyone else? A deviation. A collective <em>other<\/em>. That\u2019s not equity. That\u2019s erasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And let\u2019s be real <strong>White is a colour<\/strong>. Just as much a social construct as any other racial identity. Yet when we say, \u201cPeople of Colour\u201d, we create a binary: White people on one side, and <em>everyone else<\/em> lumped together as a monolith. That\u2019s not how racial identity works. That\u2019s not how culture, struggle, or joy works either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Problem with the Umbrella<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople of Colour\u201d tries to unite people with vastly different experiences Caribbean, , Asian, Indigenous, African, Arab, and more into one category. But it often does so in ways that mask unique struggles and erase individual identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What happens when you group everyone together?<\/strong> You risk:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ignoring anti-Black racism by diluting it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimising the lived realities of South Asian or East Asian communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forgetting the sovereignty and displacement of Indigenous people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overlooking colourism, internal racism, and layered identities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>One label. Many erasures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We Need Specificity, Not Simplicity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of \u201cPeople of Colour\u201d, <strong>say what you really mean<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Talking about racism faced by people and communities experiencing racism.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talking about anti-Muslim hate? Say <strong>Muslim<\/strong> or <strong>South Asian<\/strong>, or the specific ethnic group.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talking about systemic exclusion in leadership? Name the exact <strong>ethnic<\/strong> or <strong>racial<\/strong> disparities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Language shapes how we see people. If we\u2019re serious about equality, we must move away from language that blurs the lines and <em>reassert real, specific visibility<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So, What Should We Say Instead?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use terms that are <strong>accurate, respectful, and rooted in context<\/strong>. Ask people how they identify. Centre <em>their<\/em> voice, not colonial language hand-me-downs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because when we lump everyone into &#8220;People of Colour&#8221;, we centre Whiteness once again by making it the one identity that doesn\u2019t need a collective label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s time to flip that script.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s talk plainly. &#8220;People of Colour&#8221; is a term many of us use with good intentions.
