Disturbingly, some of these involve Reception-aged pupils who are just four years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While young children may not fully understand the words they repeat, their peers who experience racist slurs or actions feel the hurt deeply. Racism is not simply \u201cbad behaviour,\u201d it undermines a child\u2019s emotional safety, their confidence, and their sense of belonging. The scars can last a lifetime if ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why is this happening?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts point to several factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Post-Covid social disruption<\/strong> \u2013 Many children missed out on key years of socialisation, learning how to communicate respectfully.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Online influence<\/strong> \u2013 Racist language and stereotypes are being copied from TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lack of understanding<\/strong> \u2013 Reception-age children may not grasp that words can be harmful, but that does not lessen their impact.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What can schools and families do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Zero tolerance<\/strong>: Schools must have clear policies and act swiftly when racism occurs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Staff training<\/strong>: Teachers should be supported to confidently challenge racist behaviour and explain why it is wrong.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Parental guidance<\/strong>: Families need resources to help them talk openly with children about race and respect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Early conversations<\/strong>: Avoiding the subject doesn\u2019t protect children. Naming racism and explaining fairness in age-appropriate ways helps them grow up kind and inclusive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why it matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every child deserves to feel safe, valued and included at school. Racism is not just a disciplinary issue; it is a safeguarding concern. Children must learn from the earliest age that differences are something to celebrate, not mock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a society, we cannot accept 15,000 exclusions for racism as \u201cnormal.\u201d The rise is unacceptable, but it is also a call to action.
