While some may dismiss them as \u201cjust a joke\u201d or \u201cbanter,\u201d research shows that <strong>83% of people have experienced microaggressions at work<\/strong>, and the cumulative effect can feel like \u201cdeath by a thousand cuts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Examples include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cYou\u2019re so articulate.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cYou\u2019re pretty for a Black girl.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cCan I touch your hair?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These may not be intended as offensive, but each remark carries the weight of bias and can have a significant impact on individuals\u2019 wellbeing and sense of belonging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Impact of Microaggressions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every microaggression stings. Over time, they build up, creating a toxic environment where employees may feel isolated, undervalued, or unsafe. It is not just the words spoken, but the underlying assumptions and stereotypes they reveal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those on the receiving end, there is often a fear of speaking up: <em>\u201cIf I say something, what will happen to me?\u201d<\/em> This silence perpetuates the cycle, leaving harmful behaviour unchallenged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What Needs to Change?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A safe and inclusive workplace is one where <strong>everyone feels empowered to speak up against microaggressions<\/strong>. According to Race Equality Matters, <strong>73% of employees believe the \u201cIt\u2019s Not Micro\u201d solution would help tackle racial inequality<\/strong> within their organisation. But how do we get there?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Allies Need to Speak Up<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence can be complicity. Allies play a crucial role in challenging microaggressions in the moment. Phrases such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cMay I just check what you meant by that?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cIt can\u2019t be \u2018just banter\u2019 if it hurts someone.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These simple, non-confrontational questions disrupt harmful behaviour while opening space for reflection and dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Reflect, Don\u2019t Defend<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone challenges your words or behaviour, resist the urge to get defensive. Instead, reflect: <em>How might my comment have been received? Could it be experienced as harmful?<\/em> Growth begins with awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Organisations Must Demonstrate Commitment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Policy alone isn\u2019t enough. Organisations need to actively demonstrate that tackling microaggressions matters. This means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Providing training and education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating clear reporting mechanisms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Modelling inclusive behaviours at leadership level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Mark Lomas, Head of Culture at Lloyd\u2019s, notes: <em>\u201cWhen we form the habits of calling out microaggressions and being more educated, that\u2019s when the change happens.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Moving Forward Together<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certain words, phrases, and behaviours may seem small, but their impact is not. By building a culture where employees feel safe to speak up \u2014 and where allies take responsibility to challenge \u2014 workplaces can move from silence to solidarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you hear it, don\u2019t ignore it.
