Standing Firm in Pride and Power – The Story of Alyson Moore

Every day, Alyson Moore delivers on Black history her own, and that of others whose lived experiences shape the tapestry of Britain today. Through her work, she runs conferences on Black history, bringing professionals together to have courageous conversations about racial equality. She leads book clubs that educate, inspire, and challenge, creating spaces where leaders can learn and become truly culturally aware and competent.

Alyson’s work is not just about the present — it’s about creating a legacy for all, one grounded in truth, awareness, and empowerment.

A Journey of Resilience and Purpose

Some stories are born from privilege. Others are carved out of pain, perseverance, and purpose. The story of Alyson Moore is one of the latter a journey of courage, resilience, and triumph against all odds.

Alyson’s story begins thousands of miles away in Barbados, where as a young child she lived with her mother until, at just five years old, she boarded a plane with her two older siblings for the very first time. Her destination: England, to meet her father a man she hadn’t seen since she was just three and a half weeks old.

That journey, one that should have been filled with excitement and reunion, instead marked the beginning of a long and painful chapter. Life with her stepmother, Edna, was marked by abuse, cruelty, and fear. While her father worked away in Carlisle, Alyson and her two siblings endured years of physical and emotional harm. For many, such trauma might have broken their spirit. But not Alyson.

Despite the pain, she held onto her light  her intelligence, her determination, and her sense of justice. A bright and clever child, Alyson channelled her energy into learning. She excelled at school, earning strong CSE results, proving to herself and to the world that her circumstances would not define her destiny.

From there, she built a life grounded in service, education, and empowerment.

Alyson went on to college, earned a qualification in social work, and began her career running a children’s home determined to create the kind of safe, loving environment she had been denied. Her drive for knowledge and change didn’t stop there. She gained her teaching qualification, an MPhil, and two further degrees, alongside senior leadership roles in education.

Over the years, Alyson became a manager in three further education colleges and one sixth form, a research officer for four years, and eventually Head of Education in Manchester. Each role reflected her unwavering belief that education could transform lives  and that every child, no matter their start, deserves safety, opportunity, and hope.

In 1997, Alyson founded her own business, focused on equality, education, and social justice. She officially joined the business full-time in 2005, and continues to lead it today with the same passion and integrity that have shaped her entire career.

But Alyson’s contribution extends far beyond her professional success. She has devoted herself to volunteering across more than eight areas, from education, arts, and policing to race equality, mentoring, community cohesion, and social justice. Whether on radio, television, or at national equality platforms, Alyson stands firm  not just in pride, but in power.

Her power comes from her resilience, from never giving up, and from listening to her father’s words that have guided her since childhood:

“You have to be in it to win it.”

Her pride comes from him too  from his legacy of community service and activism across Stretford and Old Trafford, where he inspired others through his compassion, leadership, and commitment to making a difference. He engaged Alyson at the age of 15 to teach Black children at the Saturday school at Carmoor Rd where she developed her love of educating others

The small child who once carried trauma across an ocean grew into a woman who carries others lifting communities, challenging injustice, and inspiring generations.

Through her writing, research, and relentless dedication, Alyson Moore has become living proof that resilience can turn pain into purpose, and that true pride is born not from perfection, but from perseverance.

A Word of Gratitude

Alyson’s story is not hers alone  it is also the story of those who stood beside her when she could not yet stand tall.

She gives heartfelt thanks to the mentors and coaches who, though often working informally, shaped her into the woman she is today. To her sister Sandra, who became a surrogate mother when Alyson was just six years old; to her brother Colin, who saved her life at fourteen when despair seemed too great to bear; to Mage Ben-Tovim, who gave her the confidence to believe in herself; and to the late Wally Brown, whose wisdom, friendship, and encouragement left an indelible mark. To her children, grand children and her great husband Joel who taught her to laugh, relax and know that she is loved

To each of them, and to every person who believed in her light thank you.

Alyson continues to stand firm in pride and power not only for herself, but for the communities she serves, the children she inspires though her training, consultancy, writing of books she gives so much more and leaves a legacy for the generations who will follow her path toward equality, courage, and hope.
